Key Stage 1
Welcome to Key Stage 1 at SPCEDS. We are made up of two classes in both Year 1 and Year 2. The team in KS1 plan together to ensure that all our children are offered a wide and enriched curriculum. As your child progresses through KS1 s/he will cover a two year rolling programme of skills based topics implementing and developing the Key Skills taught in Maths and English Key Skills sessions throughout our Learning Journeys. Opportunities will be made available to give the children real life experiences that will give a purpose to their learning, e.g. trips, writing based on trips or visitors and challenges for Reading, Writing and Mathematics. The children will have regular access to Performance Areas, Maths Challenge Areas and a wide use of ICT to enrich their learning. The children's Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development is also very important to us and will be considered and developed through the use of Philosophy 4 Children, (P4C) lessons, use of Thinking Tools such as Thinking Maps, Thinking Hats and Circle Times.
In Year 1 the children will continue to access a play based learning curriculum as they did in Foundation Stage with a higher level of challenge. This will allow the children to continue to develop as independent learners. The children will have regular access to the Year 1 outside area to promote outside learning and the Year 1 team will make learning as hands on and practical for children as possible. Year 1 children take part in twenty minutes phonics sessions each day to support Reading and Writing as well as receiving weekly Reading Ramble activities to promote a love of Reading.
The Year 1 curriculum has embraced the new National Curriculum. Areas of Mathematics and English are linked and developed through the children's Learning Journeys such as directional vocabulary through the journeys we take and recounts based on real life experiences and visits. The children will be given the opportunity to share their learning with the rest of the school and parents/carers through regular Class Presentations.
